Don’t Do That: Self-Leaked Passwords

September 20, 2017 By Nick Kawakami

From time to time, I’ll see a story pop by that reads something like, “Former CIA Director Assures Us He Did Not Just Tweet His Password” or “Sean Spicer Just Tweeted Something That Looks an Awful Lot Like a Password.” And up until now, I’ve always thought, “Idiots! How can you be so dumb to send out your password?!” Well, today I found out. On today’s episode of “don’t do that,” I show you how easy it is to send someone your password.

Yes, that’s me, sending my password via text to my brother, and yes, I’m now THAT idiot. However, it also gave me clarity how easy it is to do something like that, so let this be a lesson to all of you!

My computer is set to sleep after only a few minutes of inactivity, and needs a password to wake it back up. As I was working on something else at my desk, it fell asleep and the screen shut off. I pressed the space bar, and without looking, typed in my password and hit enter. Low and behold, the password portion of the sleep process had not taken effect yet, and I ended up sending the password to my brother via the Messages app. Luckily it was my brother, and luckily it was iMessage. I quickly changed my password on my computer and (hopefully) learned a valuable lesson.
